Creativity Remix
Submit original creative work and have AI remix it in new styles - showing kids their ideas are the valuable starting point.
What Is It?
Creativity Remix starts with your child’s original creation - a drawing, story, character, or idea - then uses AI to transform it into new styles. The key insight: AI needs their original input to work. Their creativity is the foundation.
Why It Works
Many kids worry AI will replace their creativity. This activity flips that fear: AI becomes a tool that amplifies their ideas, not replaces them. They see that without their original work, AI has nothing to remix.
My 13-year-old was skeptical until he saw his simple robot sketch transformed into steampunk, anime, and realistic styles. His reaction: “It needs my idea to do anything cool.”
How To Do It
Step 1: Create Something Original
Your child creates something from scratch:
- A simple drawing or doodle
- A short story or story idea (even a few sentences)
- A character description
- A made-up creature or invention
- A melody hummed or played
- A poem or song lyrics
Important: This must be 100% their original work. No AI help yet.
Step 2: Describe It to AI
Have them describe their creation:
“I drew a robot with three eyes and wheels instead of legs. It’s friendly and has a heart on its chest. Can you describe what this robot would look like in different art styles?”
Or for a story:
“I wrote a story about a kid who finds a door in their closet that leads to a world where gravity is reversed. Can you suggest three different ways this story could go?”
Step 3: Explore the Remixes
AI might suggest:
- The robot in steampunk style (gears, copper, Victorian)
- The robot in anime style (big expressive eyes, dynamic pose)
- The robot in realistic style (weathered metal, mechanical details)
For stories, it might offer:
- A comedy version
- A mystery version
- A version from the villain’s perspective
Step 4: Choose and Create More
Your child picks their favorite remix direction and creates more:
- Draws a new version inspired by the style
- Writes the next chapter in the suggested direction
- Combines elements they liked from multiple suggestions
Step 5: Reflect
Ask: “What did you like about what AI suggested? What would you do differently?” This builds critical thinking about AI output.
Example in Action
Original: 8-year-old’s story idea: “A cat who can talk but only to one girl”
Prompt: “I have a story idea about a cat who can talk, but only one girl can hear it. Can you suggest three different settings where this story could happen?”
AI suggestions:
- Modern city apartment - the cat helps the shy girl make friends at school
- Medieval castle - the cat is a magical guardian with ancient secrets
- Space station - the cat is an alien in disguise, warning about danger
Child’s choice: “I like the space station! But I want to keep the cat helping with friendship too.”
New creation: Child writes a story combining space setting with friendship theme.
What We’ve Learned
- Simple starting points work better than complex ones
- Kids get more engaged when they pick the remix direction
- Some kids prefer visual remixes, others prefer story remixes
- The “what would you do differently” question sparks great discussions
Warning Signs (When to Reset)
- They’re asking AI to create from scratch instead of remixing their ideas
- They’re copying AI’s suggestions exactly without adding their own spin
- They seem disappointed that AI’s version is “better” than theirs
If this happens, emphasize: “AI couldn’t have made any of this without your original idea. That’s the hard part - you did that.”
Parent Tip
Try this yourself. Share a simple idea with AI and show your child the remix. Demonstrate how you evaluate suggestions: “I like this part, but I’d change that…”
